What the twenty questions cover

The quiz works two seams. The first is animal classes — the sorting that gives every creature its shelf, and the reason a bat and a sparrow part ways despite both having wings. Expect to be handed an animal and asked where it belongs, or handed a class and asked what earns membership.

The second seam is the record-holders. These are the stable kind of record — distinctions that belong to a whole kind of animal rather than to one celebrated individual — which is what makes them fair material for a quiz with a fixed answer key.

Where the answer key comes from

Every answer on Fauna traces back to a dataset that was built twice. Two authors filled in the same fixed set of keys independently: a question catalog plus structured tables of animal classes, baby-animal names, collective nouns, breed origins, and animal sounds. The two copies were then compared value by value. Out of 196 keys, 194 agreed. The two that did not were genuinely contested facts, and rather than pick a side, we dropped them from the site. A contested fact makes a rotten multiple-choice question. The same caution applies to facts that rot on their own — conservation statuses revised yearly, records that trade hands — which the site avoids outright.

How a round works

Each question gives you four options. Choose one and the result appears at once — right or wrong, with the correct answer shown either way. When you finish, a full review lays out all twenty questions and how you did on each. Your best score is saved in your browser, so the next attempt has a number to beat. There is no signup and nothing to download; the quiz runs entirely in the page.
